When people talk about caffeine intake, the most common forms to take it are probably through coffee or tea. However, it’s not always for everyone and might have negative effects. For example consuming too much caffeine can affect how your body absorbs other nutrients such as potassium and antioxidants.

While it’s true that coffee beans contain high concentrations of antioxidants, not all beans have the same amount. This is particularly the case for the black-brown coffee beans we’re familiar with, which are roasted at 475 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature severely affects the chemical compounds in the beans, and the nutrients they possess.

This doesn’t mean that there aren’t any more nutrients you can get from your typical black brewed coffee. In fact, there’s emerging evidence that show moderate caffeine intake can actually contribute to disease prevention and weight loss, since it can boost metabolism by 3 to 11 per cent.

If you’re wondering how to maximize the nutrients that come from Coffea Arabica, you only need to look as far as the other color these coffee beans possess: green. Simply put, green coffee beans are unroasted coffee beans. Therefore, the compounds and nutrients are more pure and concentrated.

How Do You Take Green Coffee Bean?

Green coffee beans are not roasted and therefore contain the the high levels of antioxidants and other health benefits that roasted beans don't possess. Brewing these beans will result in a depletion of its nutrients, so green coffee bean extracts are typically taken in pill form.

How Does It Work?

The two most active compounds of coffee beans are caffeine and chlorogenic acid.

Studies done on mice and rats revealed that chlorogenic acid can minimize the fat that ends up in our liver, and boost the function of adiponectin, a fat-burning hormone.

Several studies show this compound is able to reduce the body's absorption of carbohydrates in the digestive tract. In turn, the body has lower blood sugar and lower insulin spikes.

It also gives our metabolism a boost, which lowers the release of glucose into the blood. When the body lacks glucose, it tends to burn the stored fat to meet the needed glucose intake.

In a series of controlled trials to determine the effects of caffeine and coffee beans in the body, 30 overweight people participated in a study that spanned 12 weeks. During this period, one group consumed instant coffee with green coffee extract and the other with regular instant coffee.

At the end of the trial, data revealed that the group who took coffee with green coffee bean extract lost 11.9 pounds and had lower body fat percentage by 3.6%. In comparison, the group who took regular instant coffee only lost 3.7 pounds and a 0.7% loss in body fat.

 

What other health benefits does it have?

Diabetes and glucose consumption

Since chlorogenic acid lowers the body's intake of blood sugar and helps regulate insulin, green coffee bean extracts are also beneficial for those with Type 2 diabetes. It also improves blood circulation helps lower cholesterol levels.

Brain disease prevention

According to research in the Journal of Nutritional Neuroscience, there's increasing evidence that supports chlorogenic acid's ability to lower the risk of developing degenerative brain diseases.

Source of glutathione and antioxidants

Chlorogenic acid also increases the amount of glutathione in the body. Glutathione isn't just responsible for skin whitening, but in fact, it's an antioxidant that helps the body get rid of toxins and free radicals.

 

Dosage

When taking green coffee bean supplements, it’s important to check with your doctor if you’re taking these in conjunction with prescribed medication. There’s only a certain amount of caffeine our body can take on a daily basis, so it’s important to find out how much your body can tolerate to prevent negative effects on your body.
